"Capoeira is another way of seeing the world; Capoeira is another way of constructing the world around you."
Contra Mestre Jamaicano
Mestre Fantasma (Simon Atkinson)
I started capoeira by accident - I was dragged there by a friend who thought I might enjoy it. He left capoeira shortly afterwards and I kept training and learning and discovering the richness of the art.
Teaching capoeira is a way of me sharing my experience and allowing people to access this rich cultural artform. The freedom and insight that capoeira gives you extends beyond the few hours of practice that we do. Capoeira is another way of seeing the world; Capoeira is another way of constructing the world around you.
Mestre Fantasma is the founder of East London Capoeira. Simon discovered capoeira after years of karate and other fighting arts and it changed the course of his life.
After starting with Senzala and meeting Mestre Marrom Simon began to develop is own vision of capoeira, strongly influenced by his encounters with the old Bahian masters that he was fortunate enough to meet. An emphasis on musicality and tradition are always present in his lessons.
Simon is the first English Mestre of capoeira and teaches regular classes in Hackney. You can find information about his work at www.capoeira.co.uk.
